Going gourmet & home-made, instead of wallowing in the super-size-me culture: How much does the average Australian know about the beef patties they're eating? "Hamburger", as the name implies, derived its name from its origin in Hamburg, Germany. It's so called as the original founders that brought this recipe to Australia, the United States of America, Canada and South Africa were German citizens. It's their tradition to always name any of their original discoveries by the name of the place it was developed. As the name may suggest the presence of ham, hamburgers can naturally enough be prepared in a variety of creatively tasty ways.
When exploring the world's best hamburger recipes - for making a good hamburger we found a few more choice recipes surprisingly at a website called http://fastfoodbadforyou.com which even has a recipe for hamburger meat soup!
Healthier Fast Food Restaurants - they sure have improved over the last few years, but only as a reaction to consumer consciousness. Calories/carbs/sugars/etc may not be in the meat anymore, with at least one fast food outlet boasting how its hamburger patty meat is 100% Australian grown, but what about the buns, sauces and cheese which goes with them? Sodium for instance is just as likely to kill you as fat. For a decent food activist website (unfortunately in the USA only) check out http://bigfoodlist.com
The best reason of all to make your own meat or beef burger patties? It's not just that they will taste better than something you buy pre-made in the supermarket. It's the fact that they will be healthier. We did a bit of research and brought home a packet of a leading Australian supermarket brand's Traditional Beef Meatballs so we could read the fine print - and these are the ingredients as they've self-published on the label: Beef (78%), Water, Salt, Dextrose, Wheat Flour (Gluten), Soya Protein, Soya Fibre, Dehydrated vegetable, Sugar, Food Acids (262, 331), Mineral Salt (450), Natural Flavouring, Vegetable Oil, Prservative (223), Natural Colouring, Spices, Antioxidants (301, 316). That's what they publish exactly on their product label, we haven't embellished it in anyway (purchased on 25/4/2009 in Sydney's inner west).
